Copper Prices Decline as US Tariff Concerns Ease

Copper futures fell toward $6.50 per pound on Tuesday, nearing one-month lows as expectations grew that the US may abandon proposed tariffs on refined copper imports. Markets increasingly anticipate that the Trump administration could shelve the tariff plans ahead of the midterm elections amid tightening global supplies and persistent inflationary pressures. Copper prices reached record highs last month as traders redirected shipments to US warehouses in anticipation of potential tariffs, tightening availability in other major markets. Additional support came from labor strikes and adverse weather conditions that disrupted mining operations in Chile, the world’s largest copper producer. On the demand side, copper continued to benefit from strong growth prospects in data center infrastructure, semiconductor manufacturing and battery energy storage systems.
