Dollar General shares jump on better-than-expected Q2 results

Dollar General shares gained more than 5% after reporting second-quarter earnings of $2.23 per share on sales of $11.290 billion and raising FY26 guidance above estimates.

U.S. stocks traded higher midway through trading, with the Dow Jones index gaining around 200 points on Thursday.

The Dow traded up 0.39% to 53,673.57 while the NASDAQ climbed 1.53% to 26,530.37.

The S&P 500 also rose, gaining, 0.79% to 7,736.71.

Leading and Lagging Sectors Information technology shares jumped by 3.2% on Thursday.

In trading on Thursday, consumer staples stocks fell by 1.1%.

Top Headline Dollar General (NYSE: DG ) shares gained more than 5% on Thursday after the company reported better-than-expected second-quarter financial results and raised its FY26 guidance above estimates.

Dollar General reported quarterly earnings of $2.23 per share which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $2.01 per share.

The company reported quarterly sales of $11.290 billion which beat the analyst consensus estimate of $11.197 billion.

Equities Trading UP Propanc Biopharma Inc ( NASDAQ: PPCB ) shares shot up 157% to $2.75 after the company announced preclinical and early translational data for its lead candidate PRP in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma.

Shares of Okta Inc (NASDAQ: OKTA ) got a boost, surging 22% to $164.62 as the company posted upbeat second-quarter results.

Veeva Systems Inc ( NYSE: VEEV ) shares were also up, gaining 18% to $289.44 as the company posted better-than-expected second-quarter results.

Equities Trading DOWN Build-A-Bear Workshop, Inc ( NYSE: BBW ) shares dropped 23% to $30.06 after the company reported worse-than-expected second-quarter sales results and cut its FY26 sales guidance below estimates.

Shares of Healthequity Inc ( NASDAQ: HQY ) were down 14% to $89.52. after the company reported second-quarter financial results.

The company affirmed its FY27 adjusted EPS guidance with its midpoint below estimates.

Wendy’s Co (NASDAQ: WEN ) was down, falling 13% to $7.86 following a report suggesting that Nelson Peltz’s Trian Fund is not making a take-private bid for the company.

Commodities In commodity news, oil traded up 0.8% to $82.88 while gold traded down 0.5% at $4,630.10.

Silver traded up 0.3% to $68.245 on Thursday, while copper rose 1.1% to $6.6730.

Euro zone European shares were lower today.

The eurozone’s STOXX 600 fell 0.9%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index fell 0.9%, London’s FTSE 100 fell 0.9%, Germany’s DAX slipped 0.1%, while France’s CAC 40 dipped 1.7%.

Asia Pacific Markets Asian markets closed mostly lower on Wednesday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 falling 0.20%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index dropping 0.34%, China’s Shanghai Composite rising 1.13% and India’s BSE Sensex falling 0.70%.

Economics U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 4,000 to 203,000 in the third week of August, compared to market estimates of 208,000.

U.S. wholesale inventories climbed by 1.3% month-over-month to $959.1 billion in July, following a revised 0.3% gain in June.

The US goods trade deficit rose to $118.8 billion in July from $101.4 billion in the previous month.
