JPMorgan: Broadening Breadth Looks More Positioning-Driven Than a Fundamental Rotation

The latest broadening in market breadth appears to reflect positioning rather than a genuine shift in fundamentals. Investors are using short-dated calls to hedge popular shorts and underweight sectors, but there is little evidence of customers aggressively chasing laggards higher or flipping outright long. The clearest rotation is within TMT, where preference remains for large-cap quality names with strong financing access and control of compute, particularly hyperscalers. For AI, several conditions investors wanted before re-risking have now been met, including the passing of the midterms, reiterated capex guidance, semiconductor earnings, a positioning washout and improved capital-markets activity. However, the Democratic sweep has introduced a new regulatory overhang, leading investors to reassess valuations across the group. The setup is becoming more attractive, but conviction remains low and it is still difficult to call a bottom before more AI-related capital-markets events play out.
