New Zealand Stocks Muted After Jobs Data

The NZX 50 was almost flat, trading around 13,726 on Tuesday, after gaining in the previous session as traders assessed the latest jobs data. The data showed that unemployment unexpectedly rose to an 11-year high of 5.7% in Q3 2026, up from 5.6% in Q2, defying market expectations for a decline to 5.5% in Q3. Traders also monitored early voting in New Zealand ahead of the 7 November general election, with nearly 1 million ballots having been cast in the first week of early voting. Gains in the energy and technology sectors offset declines in communication services, financials, and real estate. However, an upbeat session on Wall Street overnight lifted sentiment, while rising oil prices weighed on market sentiment. Fisher & Paykel increased 0.7%, Freightways Group gained 0.7%, Channel Infrastructure rose 0.6%, and Fletcher Building climbed 0.6%, while Henderson Far East Income and South Port NZ fell by 1.6% and 0.7%, respectively.
