Trump Calls for US to Cut Trade Ties with Spain on NATO Defense Spending

US President Donald Trump wants to "cut off all trade" with Spain, saying the European country does not contribute enough to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. On the sidelines of the NATO summit, Trump said Wednesday at a news conference, as quoted by various media including CNBC, that Spain is a "terrible partner" in the military alliance and that they do not pay or participate. CNBC, which noted that Spain is the only NATO member that did not commit to increasing spending to 5% of its GDP on defense by 2035 but increased its spending to 2.1% in 2025, also reported the Spanish prime minister's office as saying that the comment was business as usual.
