South African Rand Firms Slightly
The South African rand edged up to around 16.6 against the US dollar, recovering some ground but remaining close to its weakest level since late July. The currency found support from a weaker US dollar and firmer precious metals prices, which boosted sentiment towards commodity-linked currencies and improved South Africa's export revenue prospects. Lower oil prices also provided some relief, given the country's reliance on imported crude oil and petroleum products, helping to reduce import costs and ease inflationary pressures. Inflation quickened to 4.5% last month and has been above the central bank’s 3% target since March. Meanwhile, Governor Lesetja Kganyago recently expressed confidence that the current policy approach will be able to bring inflation down to its 3% goal after the initial shocks triggered by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East fade.
