Hong Kong Stocks Edge Up to Begin the Week
The Hang Seng Index edged up about 0.4%, or 87 points, to open at 23,381 on Monday, extending gains from the previous session, led by technology stocks. However, concerns over a potential AI bubble in China could create volatility ahead, although a shift in investor funds from overvalued AI stocks into traditional sectors such as banking, insurance and consumer businesses could provide further support for the broader index. Banking shares also remained in focus as China’s major state-owned lenders reported their strongest quarterly profit growth in years, with Q3 earnings rising 6.4%—10.8% on stabilising margins and lower deposit costs. Notable movers included Tencent (2.4%), Xiaomi (2.9%), AIA Group (0.6%) and Semiconductor Manufacturing (0.9%). On the downside, Lenovo (-1.1%), Genscript Biotech (-1.6%) and Wuxi Biologics (-1.3%) declined. On the data front, Hong Kong’s preliminary Q3 GDP figures are due tomorrow, offering a fresh read on the domestic economic backdrop.
