UniCredit Seeks to Reassure German Businesses Over Commerzbank Takeover
CEO Andrea Orcel said UniCredit intends to build on both banks’ existing networks and customer relationships rather than reduce services. The German government, which holds a stake in Commerzbank, has stressed the lender’s role in financing the economy.
UniCredit, which has secured access to nearly half of Commerzbank's shares and received regulatory approval from the ECB for a potential takeover, is working to address concerns from German medium-sized enterprises. CEO Andrea Orcel stated that the bank intends to build upon the existing networks and customer relationships of both Hypovereinsbank (HVB) and Commerzbank rather than reducing services. The German government, holding a roughly 13 percent stake in Commerzbank, continues to emphasize the importance of the bank's role in financing the German economy.
UniCredit has previously indicated that a takeover could lead to significant cost savings, including potential job reductions and a streamlining of Commerzbank's international network.
