SK Telecom to Invest KRW140 Trillion to Establish AI Hub in Yeongnam; Shares Decline 3%
SK Telecom (KRX:017670) plans to invest 140 trillion won to establish an artificial intelligence (AI) hub in South Korea's Yeongnam region, Yonhap News reported Friday. The telecommunications giant plans to build AI data centers in the region. Under the investment plan, the company will begin to build a 100-megawatt hyperscale AI data center in Ulsan, targeting operations by the fourth quarter of 2027, before expanding capacity by another 1.9 gigawatts in the Yeongnam region, it said. The company aims to reach 5 gigawatts of AI data center capacity by 2029, which would require an investment of about 350 trillion won, the report said. SK Telecom did not immediately respond to ' request for a comment. Shares of the company fell nearly 3% in recent trade.
