European Commission Unveils Five Joint Defense Schemes, Earmarks EUR325 Million Investment
The European Commission on July 3 outlined five new large-scale projects to enhance the bloc's defense with key military systems that are too large or complex for countries to manufacture separately. Known as the European Defence Projects of Common Interest, or EDPCIs, the schemes will work on the development of drones and counter-drone systems; maritime and seabed defense; space; air and missile defense; and the enhancement of security along the European Union's Eastern Flank. Earlier, the commission apportioned 325 million euros for the establishment and deployment of the EDPCIs. Next, the European Council will discuss the formal creation of the EDPCIs, the list of participating countries, and the projected capital generation from the EDPCI.
