ECB Authorizes Intesa Sanpaolo’s Control Acquisition of Monte dei Paschi
The ECB approved Intesa Sanpaolo’s acquisition of a direct controlling interest in Monte dei Paschi di Siena, including indirect control of several subsidiaries. The approval is part of Intesa Sanpaolo’s public purchase and exchange offer launched June 8, 2026.
Intesa Sanpaolo has received formal authorization from the European Central Bank to acquire a direct controlling interest in Monte dei Paschi di Siena (MPS). This regulatory approval also extends to the indirect control of various subsidiaries within the MPS group, including Wise Dialog Bank, Mediobanca, Mediobanca Premier, and Compass Banca, as well as a qualified indirect stake in Banca Progetto. The ECB's decision is a critical milestone in the public purchase and exchange offer launched by Intesa Sanpaolo on June 8, 2026. The authorization covers the entire banking structure that would fall under Intesa Sanpaolo's orbit should the acquisition succeed.
This development comes as MPS shareholders prepare to vote on various corporate operations.
