South African Rand at Near 1-Month Low

The South African rand traded around 16.7 per USD, its lowest since early October, pressured by a firmer greenback and lower prices of key precious metals such as gold and platinum group metals (PGMs). Elevated oil prices and geopolitical uncertainty added to the pressure, putting pressure on energy-importing economies such as South Africa and complicating the outlook for central banks. However, domestic fiscal developments offered some support, with Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana’s Medium-Term Budget Policy Statement (MTBPS) outlining continued progress towards fiscal consolidation and drawing a positive response from major credit rating agencies. Meanwhile, South Africa's annual inflation rose for the second month to 4.5% in September 2026 from 4.4% in August, but below the expected 4.7%.
