French Stocks Fall as ECB Decision Looms

The CAC 40 fell 0.4% to 7,817 on Tuesday, reversing gains from the previous session as investors braced for major central bank decisions later this week. The European Central Bank is due to announce its policy decision on Thursday and is widely expected to leave interest rates unchanged. The decline came despite a tech-led rebound in other markets following Anthropic’s IPO filing and improving hopes for a diplomatic breakthrough in the Middle East. Domestically, France’s consumer confidence indicator fell to 80 in October 2026 from 85 in September, missing expectations and reaching its lowest level since June 2013, amid rising bond yields, austerity disputes and cost-of-living protests. On the corporate front, Orange fell 1.5% despite raising its 2026 core earnings growth target and maintaining solid revenue in Q3. Other notable decliners included ENGIE (-1.8%), Saint-Gobain (-1.3%) and Dassault Systèmes (-1%).
