Kodal Minerals eyes lithium expansion

The miner has now agreed to acquire up to 80% of the Asamankese lithium exploration project in Ghana. Kodal Minerals plans to expand its lithium business across West Africa, betting the gold-rich region can become a major supplier of the battery metal, Reuters reported. The London-listed miner began producing lithium last year in Mali, in a joint venture with Chinese mining company Hainan Mining. Kodal has now agreed to acquire up to 80% of the Asamankese lithium exploration project in Ghana. Africa is attracting investment from major miners as China and Western governments compete to secure minerals for clean energy and advanced technologies. Lithium, used in rechargeable batteries for electric vehicles, electronics, and electricity storage, has drawn more than $2 billion in Chinese investment to Zimbabwe, Africa’s largest producer, since 2021.
