China Stocks Kick Off Week Lower

The Shanghai Composite fell 0.6% to 3,670 on Monday, while the Shenzhen Component dropped 1.6% to 11,489, as investors braced for a busy week of corporate earnings, with results from AI-linked firms in focus. Chinese technology companies, including Eoptolink Technology Inc. and GigaDevice Semiconductor, will be closely watched for signs that earnings can justify the massive investments pouring into AI. Semiconductor and technology stocks led the declines, with SMIC (-2.5%), Hygon Information Technology (-3.4%), Zhongji Innolight (-5.1%) and Eoptolink Technology (-6.6%) among the biggest laggards. Meanwhile, earnings from BYD Co., Air China Ltd. and Kweichow Moutai Co. will offer clues on whether domestic consumption can help support growth as the economy remains heavily reliant on exports. Investors are also looking ahead to the Chinese Communist Party’s Fifth Plenum, which concludes on October 26-27, for further guidance on economic priorities and policy direction.
