Platinum Sinks to 11-Month Low
Platinum futures dropped below $1,560 an ounce, hitting their lowest level since November 2025, as a liquidity-driven selloff swept across precious metals amid a broader stock market rout. Growing concerns over the sustainability of AI investment triggered a sharp decline in US stocks and a rally in Treasuries, prompting investors to liquidate gold and other liquid assets to meet margin calls and cover losses elsewhere. Non-yielding metals also remained under pressure from rising oil prices, which heightened inflation concerns and strengthened expectations that interest rates could stay elevated for longer. Platinum also faces fundamental headwinds, with the World Platinum Investment Council forecasting a 265,000-ounce market surplus in 2026, as weaker investment demand and softer jewelry consumption weigh on the outlook. Automotive demand is also expected to decline 4%, partly offset by a projected 5% increase in industrial demand.
