Swiss Bond Yield Retreats to One-Month Low

The yield on the Swiss 10-year government bond fell to 0.5%, its lowest level in over a month, supported by safe-haven demand amid concerns over Europe's fiscal outlook. In contrast, Switzerland has one of the lowest levels of public debt in Europe, with its 2026 budget seen remaining in surplus, aided by a sharp rise in corporate tax revenue that funded a temporary boost to defense spending. Still, Finance Minister Keller-Sutter voiced concerns last week of the risks of rising public debt levels in Europe to economic stability. Adding to the country's stability, SNB meeting minutes showed policymakers saw inflationary pressures with no signs of spillover effects into the economy, attributing the rise in inflation to higher oil prices and the franc's depreciation. The SNB kept its policy rate at 0%, with Chair Schlegel stating no adjustment was currently needed as inflation remains stable. While economists expect rates to hold through 2027, markets are pricing in a hike in early 2027.
