DAX Closes in the Red

Frankfurt’s DAX 40 closed about 1.2% down at 25,304 on Monday, tracking broader weakness across European markets, pressured by rising bond yields and elevated oil prices. Violent weekend protests in France renewed concerns about political and fiscal stability, prompting investors to reassess sovereign debt risks and pushing government bond yields higher. Fears mounted that France’s fiscal difficulties could spill over into other heavily indebted eurozone economies, particularly Italy. At the same time, persistent geopolitical risks kept oil prices elevated. Meanwhile, attention also remained on corporate earnings on both sides of the Atlantic. Most sectors faced pressure, particularly banks, utilities, industrials and insurers. RWE led losses among stocks, dropping 3%, followed by Deutsche Bank, Commerzbank and Bayer, with losses of more than 2% each. Rheinmetall fell 2.2%, mirroring weakness in defense stocks and questions about the costs of Rheinmetall’s expansion plans.
