Japanese Shares Rise as Tech Selloff Eases
The Nikkei 225 Index rose more than 1% to above 65,000 on Friday, recovering some of the previous session’s losses as selling pressure on technology stocks eased, while investors continued to evaluate the outlook for artificial intelligence. The rebound followed comments from Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, who defended the financial position of AI computing provider CoreWeave Inc. amid growing concerns about the financial health of companies involved in the AI buildout. Meanwhile, market participants awaited remarks from Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, who was scheduled to join International Monetary Fund Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva for a fireside chat in Bangkok. Notable tech gainers include Kioxia (0.7%), Advantest (0.7%) and Lasertec (3%). Financial and consumer stocks such as Mitsubishi UFJ (2%) and Toyota Motor (2.1%) also advanced. Despite Friday’s recovery, the Nikkei remained on track to post a weekly loss of more than 5%.
