Clearwater hires Sompo's MacHale as CEO
By Navneeta Nandan Oct 15 (The Insurer) — Clearwater Underwriting has appointed Henry MacHale as CEO, the marine MGA said on Thursday. MacHale is currently chief underwriting officer and head of strategy for international markets at Sompo, where he has worked for more than 15 years. He previously held senior roles at Aspen, including portfolio director for first-party and specialty lines, CUO for AIUK Insurance and group chief strategy officer. He is expected to take up the newly created role in the second quarter of 2027. Aquiline-backed Clearwater said it planned to expand beyond its marine roots and build a multiline specialty underwriting business. It will expand into selected classes and markets through targeted M&A, supported by strong broker and capacity relationships. In May, The Insurer was first to report that Clearwater had hired Sompo's Tim Strong to launch a political violence underwriting unit. In November 2025, insurance-focused private equity firm Aquiline made a majority investment in Clearwater.
