UPDATE 1 — Nestle India warns of inflationary pressures after quarterly profit jump

(Adds background, context executive comment from paragraph 3 onwards) Oct 15 (Reuters) — Nestle India flagged inflationary pressures and higher commodity costs as challenges after reporting a 36% jump in second-quarter profit on Thursday, helped by resilient demand for its packaged foods and beverages. The Indian unit of Swiss food major Nestle said its net profit rose to 10.27 billion rupees ($108.03 million) in the quarter ended September 30 from 7.53 billion rupees a year earlier. "Rising inflation, particularly food inflation, is a reality," Chairman and Managing Director Manish Tiwary said in a statement, citing "a challenging environment" due to higher commodity costs. Shares fell 7.5% after the results and management's comments. Indian consumer goods makers have faced mounting input cost pressures, especially for packaging, edible oils and agricultural commodities, although consumption tax cuts and targeted price increases have helped sales growth. Revenue from operations rose 20% to 67.88 billion rupees in the September quarter.
