Iran Says Cargo Ship Sank After Mine Strike in Strait of Hormuz
Iran said a cargo ship struck a naval mine and sank in the Strait of Hormuz. Singapore separately reported that two Singapore-registered cargo vessels were struck by unknown projectiles; one sank and the other reached safety, with no injuries reported.
Iran said on Wednesday that a cargo ship sank after hitting a naval mine in the Strait of Hormuz. The report came as Singapore reported attacks on two registered vessels passing through the strategic waterway during the ongoing war. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps navy said the unidentified ship struck a mine on Wednesday morning while following a route Iranian officials characterized as unauthorized and dangerous, the Associated Press reported. Iranian state television said the vessel carried 2,500 containers and aired images showing it tilted in the water and emitting thick smoke.
Iranian officials disclosed little further information, including about the crew’s fate. Iran’s report marked the first time during the war that it had said a ship sank after hitting a naval mine. Singapore’s Maritime and Port Authority said two Singapore-registered cargo vessels were hit by “unknown projectiles” while transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The incidents took place in the strait on Tuesday and Wednesday.
One vessel sank and the other reached safety. The authority said the sunken vessel’s crew had all been evacuated and that no injuries were reported in either incident. ” The report said it was unclear whether the Singapore-registered vessel that sank was the same ship Iran said had struck a mine. Iran has repeatedly warned ships not to transit the Strait of Hormuz without its approval.
