UPDATE 1 — Indonesia central bank remains active to ensure rupiah stability, official says
(Add details from statement) JAKARTA, Oct 15 (Reuters) — Indonesia's central bank has remained active in the foreign exchange market to ensure the stability of the rupiah, its monetary management head Erwin Hutapea said on Thursday. Consistent interventions will be carried out through non-deliverable forward (NDF) transactions in the offshore market, spot transactions and domestic NDF, Erwin said, adding that Bank Indonesia (BI) will also continue to purchase government bonds on the secondary market. "BI continues to be active in the market to ensure that market mechanisms function properly and that the stability of the rupiah is maintained in line with its fundamentals," he said in a statement. On Thursday, the rupiah fell as much as 0.34% against the US dollar to 17,955, nearing a historic low of 18,190, data shows. Higher than forecast US inflation data, which fueled expectations of more aggressive US interest rate hikes, and uncertainty about the resolution of the conflict in the Middle East, were among the factors putting pressure on currencies in emerging markets, including the rupiah, Erwin said.
