Google’s Task Feature Faces Questions Over Search Traffic Redirection
Gene Munster says Google’s Task, a Gemini feature formerly known as Spark, is its response to personal AI assistants that transact. He asks whether Google can redirect Search traffic to its AI features as it did with AI Overviews and AI Mode.
Gene Munster says personal AI poses a greater threat to Google than ChatGPT did. Google shares have risen 7% since Muse launched, compared with a 3% gain for the Nasdaq. Munster argues that ChatGPT primarily answered questions Google was not monetizing, while assistants handle transactions. He says Google built a $250B search business by routing those transactions.
Google’s response is Task, a Gemini feature previously called Spark. Munster questions whether Google can use Task, as it did with AI Overviews and AI Mode, to redirect Search traffic to its own AI features.
