Micron Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ: MU ) shares are falling Tuesday and are on track for a fourth straight session of losses as momentum builds for memory rivals in China. Micron stock is feeling bearish pressure. Why is MU stock dropping?

China’s CXMT Says It Could Launch Denser Server Memory This Year Micron’s losses were partly spurred by reports that China’s ChangXin Memory Technologies, known as CXMT, has made progress on a technique to fit more memory cells into the same space on a single chip. CXMT said a new server memory product based on a 4F² cell architecture could launch later this year, according to the South China Morning Post. CXMT President Cao Kanyu reportedly said at a conference in Shanghai that the company expects to launch a DDR5 server memory product around year-end. The 4F² design is estimated to cut cell area by about a third compared with the industry-standard 6F² design.

CXMT hasn’t disclosed density, yield or customer details. Some analysts caution that the product is general server memory and not high-bandwidth memory, or HBM, the stacked memory used with AI accelerators that benefits Micron and SK Hynix. YMTC Prepares a Shanghai IPO After Reaching No. 3 in NAND Chinese memory maker Yangtze Memory Technologies is also preparing an initial public offering on Shanghai’s STAR Market, according to Counterpoint Research.

YMTC reached third place in the global NAND memory market by shipment volume in the second quarter, behind Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix and ahead of Kioxia and Micron. Counterpoint senior analyst Jeongku Choi said the company’s 2026 revenue is expected to grow six times faster than the rest of the industry. Musk Says China Scales Faster Than Everyone Else Elon Musk weighed in on X on Monday. "When China figures out how to manufacture a product, their ability to scale is often greater than the rest of the world combined," he wrote.

Musk pointed to China’s progress in lithium batteries and solar power. He said SpaceX is ahead of the rest of the world on the weight its rockets can carry to orbit, but that China does a majority of non-SpaceX mass to orbit. Musk said the memory market could be different, though he noted that random-access memory was essentially a commoditized product only a few years ago. The AI build-out has sent RAM into a global shortage that has led to high prices and large profits for memory makers, including Micron.

" Mizuho Calls the Chip Trade Extremely Crowded Mizuho trading-desk analyst Jordan Klein said the selloff in chip stocks reflects a heavily owned AI and chip trade that can be highly volatile. He pointed to Broadcom CEO Hock Tan comparing the AI trade to a casino, with investors not fully understanding what they are investing in. Klein said the pressure reduces risk heading into earnings from ASML and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing. The PHLX Semiconductor Index was down about 3% in early trading Tuesday.

Micron carries a consensus Buy rating, with an average price target of about $1,463, according to data. 58, according to data Pro. The stock has traded lower in several consecutive sessions amid broader weakness in AI-related names. Image via Shutterstock
