Italy's BTP Yield Retreats Further

Italy’s 10-year BTP yield fell below 4.55%, retreating further to a one-week low as oil prices slid, ending a three-day rally. Russia agreed to release diesel supplies onto global markets, easing concerns over fuel shortages and the need for fiscal support to households. Italy's risk premium remained stable, with the spread over safe-haven German yields hovering near 110bps. However, investors remain cautious about the country’s fiscal outlook. Italy’s debt-to-GDP ratio, currently at 138.6%, is expected to surpass Greece’s this year, making it the eurozone’s most indebted country. Economy Minister Giorgetti said Italy was seeking European Commission approval for budgetary flexibility under the “National Escape Clause” to help shield households from energy costs. Meanwhile, the Bank of Italy warned that a budget deficit exceeding the EU’s 3% of GDP limit in 2027 and 2028 could further complicate the country’s efforts to exit from the European Union's infringement procedure.
