LIVESTOCK — CME hog futures rebound from lows on technical buying, short covering

By Karl Plume CHICAGO, Oct 12 (Reuters) — Chicago Mercantile Exchange lean hog futures firmed on Monday in a technical-buying and short-covering rebound from four sessions of losses, although weak pork prices and dull demand continued to overhang the market. Futures dropped last week to contract lows and hog contracts were all technically oversold. Commodity funds are also heavily net short in lean hog futures so the market was poised for a bounce. CME December hogs settled 0.550 cent higher at 68.375 cents per pound. "Today is just maybe a little bit of an adjustment from the moves we've seen," said Don Roose, president of US Commodities. "We're trying to get the cash market to find a floor. And it's not only in the US, it's around the world. The production is up, and the demand seems to be flat or poor," he said. The pork carcass cutout value hit its lowest point in nearly 3-1/2 years last week before two days of increases, according to US Department of Agriculture data. CME feeder cattle futures eased on Monday as feed corn prices stabilized following a steep drop on Friday. Live cattle ended mixed, with nearby contracts lower and deferred months higher.
