Generali seen pressured if Intesa acquires MPS

Baader analyst Antoine Bouchetoux says MPS’s exchange offers look increasingly unlikely and that an Intesa win could pressure Assicurazioni Generali, with shares up 1.1%.

0757 GMT - Assicurazioni Generali is seen facing pressure as Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena’s bids for Banca Generali and Banco BPM appear increasingly unlikely to succeed, Baader’s Antoine Bouchetoux wrote. Shareholder statements this week suggested MPS’s bids are likely to be rejected, the analyst said. MPS launched the two public exchange offers to counter Intesa Sanpaolo’s takeover bid. Baader said a successful MPS counter-offensive would have been a better result for Generali shareholders than an Intesa victory.

If Intesa prevails, one of Generali’s main competitors would become its largest shareholder, potentially raising antitrust concerns. By buying MPS, Intesa would gain its controlling stake in Mediobanca, which is Generali’s largest single shareholder. 1%.
