Wall Street Journal reports Broadcom is seeking more than $50 bln in financing to develop custom AI chips for OpenAI. Talks reportedly include private equity firms such as Apollo and Blackstone, with negotiations early and deal size adjustable; the raise could support production capacity of several GW and could close as early as year-end. The program is internally called Nexus at OpenAI, with first- and second-generation chips codenamed Jalapeño and Serrano.

Broadcom has been seeking more than $50 bln in financing in recent weeks to fund development of custom AI chips for OpenAI, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing people familiar with the matter. Private equity firms including Apollo and Blackstone have held talks about participating, while negotiations remain at an early stage and the financing size could still be adjusted. The proposed raise could cover production capacity of several GW of OpenAI-specific chips and could close as early as year-end, the report said. OpenAI internally calls the program Nexus, and first- and second-generation chips are codenamed Jalapeño and Serrano.

Broadcom and OpenAI previously announced plans for a 10 GW custom chip system to be deployed from H2 2026 through end-2029.
