Caterpillar shares tumble nearly 6% in Dow retreat

Caterpillar stock fell about 6%, leading the Dow’s decline and on course for its biggest drop since late July. The article also notes Caterpillar is down roughly 24% from an June 30 all-time high and that Deere and CNH Industrial trade lower as the FTC and Agriculture Department investigate potential anticompetitive conduct in farm equipment.

Caterpillar shares are leading the Dow Jones index’s retreat, with the stock down nearly 6% and on course for its biggest decline since the end of July. The shares are off about 24% from their all-time closing high of $1,065 on June 30, though they remain up nearly 42% since the start of the year. Sales of Caterpillar generators have been boosted by demand from data-center developers using the equipment for backup power or as primary electricity sources for computer servers.

Deere and CNH Industrial are also trading lower after the Federal Trade Commission and the Agriculture Department said they were investigating farm-equipment manufacturing and distribution for potential anticompetitive conduct.
