Ledgebrook raises $200 million in Allianz X-led equity financing

By Chris Munro Oct 7 (The Insurer) — E&S-focused insurtech Ledgebrook has raised $200 million in primary equity financing, co-led by Allianz X and Rockefeller Capital Management, and entered a multiyear reinsurance agreement with Allianz Re. The funding also included participation from new and existing backers. The proceeds will be used to scale Ledgebrook’s technology and extend Blackbird, its proprietary AI-native underwriting platform, the company said. Boston, Massachusetts-based Ledgebrook launched in 2022 as an MGA writing E&S casualty business.
It has since entered additional business lines for mid-sized clients, including excess, general liability, professional liability and allied healthcare. This publication was first to report in September that it is also working on a property offering. A cyber product and its so-called Ledgebrook Light offering, focused on small businesses, are understood to be in the pipeline. Through its existing products, which are distributed exclusively through wholesale brokers, Ledgebrook is on course to surpass $1 billion in cumulative premium written since it started writing business in 2023.
Ledgebrook founder and CEO Gage Caligaris said the investment would allow the company to continue investing in technology and talent. Allianz X — the strategic investment arm of Allianz Group — said Ledgebrook would diversify its US P&C portfolio by adding mid-sized E&S general liability capabilities alongside investments including Coalition, Coterie, Lemonade, Next, Openly and Pie Insurance. Allianz X CEO Nazim Cetin said the insurance industry was applying AI to its simplest risks first because that was where automation came most easily.
“We think the larger prize sits at the other end, in complex, hard-to-place business, where underwriting judgment is scarce and slow decisions cost the most,” Cetin said. “That’s exactly the gap Blackbird is built to close, and it’s why Ledgebrook fills a meaningful space in our US P&C platform,” he added. In March 2025, the company formed a reinsurance brokerage and advisory firm, Ledgebrook Re, led by Erik Soria. The unit recently hired Jonathan Kenyon from Aon and Josh Lewin from CRC Specialty.
In August, Ledgebrook secured A-minus financial strength ratings from AM Best for its two newly formed carriers. Their launch completed the company’s transition to a full-stack insurance platform ahead of the 2027 timetable set out by Caligaris last year. Ledgebrook Specialty will provide capacity for the group’s first-party business, while Stonehaven Specialty will focus on third-party business, AM Best said. ” “Admitted carriers tightened their appetite and pushed risks that were once routinely placed in the admitted market into this channel,” he said.
