Nike Lost China to Local Brands, Now It’s Trying to Think Like One

Nike Inc ’s (NYSE: NKE ) China turnaround is starting to look less like a marketing reset and more like a redesign of how the company operates. The sportswear giant is giving its China team more control over products, cutting thousands of online distribution points and trying to move at the speed of local rivals — just as investors wait for its Oct. 1 earnings report. China Became A Margin Problem The urgency is visible in the numbers. Nike’s Greater China revenue fell to $5.85 billion in fiscal 2026, down from $7.55 billion two years earlier. Segment operating profit fell even faster, from $2.31 billion in fiscal 2024 to $1.28 billion in fiscal 2026. Nike has also lost ground to domestic names such as Anta Sports and Li Ning as Chinese consumers increasingly gravitate toward brands that can respond faster to local sports trends and preferences. Sparks told China Daily that Nike has doubled the size of its local product-creation team, while the company plans to launch its first apparel collection created, designed and developed entirely in China during the coming holiday season. She described the goal as getting products to consumers faster and bringing the voice of the Chinese athlete into Nike’s global product engine.

Nike is also leaning into categories where local participation is growing. Running has emerged as a particularly important growth area, while basketball, soccer and tennis remain key sports for the China business. The Earnings Test Is Next The strategy carries a near-term cost. 3 billion in fiscal Q1 2027.

That makes the Oct. 1 earnings report more than another quarterly update. Investors will be looking for evidence that Nike’s China reset is beginning to improve demand, pricing and consumer engagement — particularly as the company prepares to resume longer-term guidance at its Nov. 16-17 Investor Day.

For NKE, the bigger question is whether acting more like a local brand can restore the global brand’s relevance in China — without sacrificing the scale and economics that made the market so valuable in the first place.
