Meta expands Instagram school partnership in US with new teen-safety features

Meta said nearly 17,000 US schools have joined its Instagram school partnership program and it will add a centralized hub plus new verified-student and school communication features.

Meta said on Tuesday it is adding new features to Instagram's school partnership program in the US, widening tools for schools and students as it works to bolster teen safety online. The company said almost 17,000 schools have signed up to the program so far. It is also building a centralized hub for school-related accounts. Verified students at participating schools will be able to use new features, including a directory of clubs and teams, school-specific stories and notes for announcements, Meta said.

Meta is also rolling out new Channels and Notes tools for verified schools, enabling communication with students, parents and the wider school community. The move comes as Meta faces closer scrutiny over the impact of its platforms on younger users. In August, Meta agreed to pay up to $18 billion over the next decade and impose strict limits on teenagers' use of Facebook and Instagram to resolve claims it designed the platforms to addict children.
