NZX 50 Ends 1.1% Lower as Oil, Bond Yields Rise

The NZX 50 fell 147 points, or 1.1%, to 13,684 on Tuesday, erasing the previous session's gains and tracking a decline on Wall Street overnight as Treasury yields rose, driven by higher oil prices and concerns about inflation and expectations of a Fed interest rate hike. Recently, RBNZ Governor Anna Breman warned that inflation could be higher if high oil prices persist. The broader index touched its lowest level since September 16, with almost all sectors trading in the red, led by energy. Traders anticipated the release of New Zealand business confidence, China’s PMI data, and the US PCE Index and jobs data due this week, which could provide clues about the Fed’s monetary policy decision at its upcoming meeting. Among the biggest laggards were Channel Infrastructure (-3.6%), Summerset Group (-3.2%), Meridian Energy (-2.9%), and Freightways Group (-2.2%). By contrast, Hallenstein Glasson surged 5.7% after posting a 49.9% jump in net profit for the year ended 1 August 2026.
