Gold futures fall to $4,130 as rate expectations rise.

Gold futures traded sharply lower, falling $150 to close near $4,130 after hitting an intraday low of $4,110—the lowest level since August 5. The decline comes as elevated oil prices reprice inflation expectations and reinforce expectations for further Federal Reserve rate hikes, boosting the U.S. dollar. Gold has now fallen roughly 12% from its August peak. Option-derived volatility upticked alongside the sharp decline, as measured by the CVOL index, while speculators accelerated their exit from net long positions that had been built up earlier in the year.
