California bar exam software provider to pay $1.3 million in class action over test failures

By Karen Sloan Sept 21 (Reuters) — The testing company involved in California’s glitch-ridden February 2025 bar exam will pay $1.35 million to end a class action lawsuit brought by test takers, according to a filing in federal court outlining the proposed settlement. Under the proposed agreement with defendant Meazure Learning filed Friday, approximately 4,100 February 2025 bar examinees would receive a full refund of the $153 laptop fee they were required to pay to take the test., Meazure provided software for California’s February 2025 bar exam — the first to be delivered both in person and online. It was marred by technological failures, with some test takers unable to log on at all and others experiencing computer crashes and other problems. Neither the plaintiffs' lead attorney nor a spokesperson for Meazure Learning, also known as ProctorU, immediately responded to requests for comment. The company asked the court to dismiss the case in 2025, arguing that its one-time-use software was an "intangible item" that doesn't qualify as a good or service under California's consumer protection laws.
