Danish company Vestas will launch a new onshore wind turbine, called V182-7.2 MW, designed to produce more power during periods of lower wind speeds. COPENHAGEN, Sept 21 (Reuters) — Vestas will launch a new onshore wind turbine designed to produce more power during periods of lower wind speeds, boosting operators' earning potential when electricity prices are typically higher, the Danish company said on Monday. 2 MW, is based on the EnVentus platform which is built on a modular design to enable more customisation without expanding the number of components. Vestas' first new onshore turbine in four years has a larger rotor than its predecessor, as well as longer blades, sweeping a 12% bigger area, it said.
"That means that we can capture wind (at) medium speed, but also low wind speed in a better way," Chief Technology Officer Felix Henseler told Reuters. As wind power generation has grown, the industry has increasingly struggled with the so-called cannibalisation effect, where power prices plunge at times of strong wind, lowering the earnings potential for producers.
