The timing of a potential launch aimed at addressing competitive pressure from a direct rival follows Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei's call on the global AI community to slow down the pace of releasing new capabilities to address safety concerns, the sources said. “We must slow the pace at which we improve the capabilities of AI models,” Amodei wrote in a 3,800-word essay on September 12. The essay, which painted a bleak picture of swarms of AI agents taking over the internet and outpacing human control, drew support from OpenAI CEO Sam Altman and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk.
