Cohere in Talks to Raise Up to $3 Billion at $20 Billion Valuation

Cohere Inc. is negotiating a major private funding round that could bring in between $2 billion and $3 billion and set its valuation around $20 billion, with a closing timeline that could land as soon as next week. The discussions were described Thursday as still in flux, with the final amount and terms not yet locked in. People familiar with the talks reported that Ottawa and current supporters are part of the financing mix, and that the bulk of the capital is expected to come from non-government sources, The Globe and Mail reported. Canada’s AI conference circuit next week could slow down final paperwork because CEO Aidan Gomez is slated to appear at multiple events. If the round is completed at the mooted valuation, it would be the biggest capital raise ever for a privately held startup based in Canada. The figure would also place the Toronto AI company among the country’s top technology names by implied value. Cohere’s last major valuation marker was about $7 billion in September, and its backers have included Radical Ventures, Inovia Capital, the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan, PSP Investments, the Business Development Bank of Canada and Nvidia Corp. The company, founded in 2019, builds large language models but focuses on enterprise and government customers rather than consumer apps. That strategy has helped Cohere pitch itself as an option for organizations that want more control over where models run and how data is handled, with clients including Royal Bank of Canada, BCE and Fujitsu.

" In April, Cohere agreed to work with Germany’s Aleph Alpha to expand its footprint in Europe, and Schwarz Group said it would put $600 million into Cohere as part of the upcoming round. In Canada, Ottawa’s AI strategy announced in June included a $500 million pool that can take equity positions in domestic AI companies, alongside other potential federal investment channels. Cohere told investors in a February letter that it generated $240 million in annual recurring revenue in 2025. The company is competing in a market dominated by far larger AI developers, while new models from Chinese firms have also gained traction.
