Ifo says Germany diverted over a third of defence-designated 2025 debt
Ifo said more than a third of additional German government debt taken on in 2025 under the defence and security spending exemption was used for other purposes, according to an analysis published Thursday.
An Ifo analysis published on Thursday said more than a third of the additional debt taken on by the German government in 2025 under the exemption for defence- and security-related spending was used for other purposes. The spending leeway created by the exemption was not fully directed to defence and security outlays, the analysis found.
