S&P/TSX Composite falls 0.6% to close at 35,907

The S&P/TSX Composite Index fell 0.6% to close at 35,907 on Wednesday after the US expanded trade restrictions on Canada, including bans on numerous alcoholic beverages, motorcycles and dairy products and 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods. Banks were pressured as rate-hike expectations rose, while miners gained on higher gold prices and Lithium Americas jumped 6.5% after J.P. Morgan initiated coverage.

Oil prices moved higher as Middle East hostilities intensified, stoking inflation worries ahead of Friday’s US CPI data.
