XFUNDS has launched the XFUNDS Large Cap Income ETF (NYSE: VOOY ), adding to a growing wave of ETFs designed to turn traditional equity exposure into a source of portfolio income.

VOOY combines U.S. large-cap equity exposure with options strategies intended to generate premiums and cash distributions.

The actively managed fund will invest primarily in ETFs tracking U.S. large-cap indexes, while using call and put spreads on individual securities or ETFs to seek additional income.

The fund may also use single-leg options, short calls and cash-secured puts.

It can hold Treasury bills, money market funds and other cash equivalents for liquidity or as collateral for its options positions.

Unlike the Vanguard S&P 500 ETF (NYSE: VOO ), which provides straightforward passive exposure to the S&P 500, VOOY adds an actively managed options strategy designed to generate additional income, though that can come with more complexity and potentially less upside in strong rallies. "Large-cap stocks are at the core of many investors’ portfolios, but we think there’s an opportunity to make that exposure work harder," XFUNDS CEO David Nicholas said.

Expense ratio carried by the fund is 0.78%.

The Rise of Option-Income ETFs The launch comes as option-income ETFs have moved increasingly into the mainstream, expanding from niche strategies into a broad ETF category targeting major indexes, sectors and individual stocks.

The appeal is quite straightforward.

By selling options, funds can collect premiums on top of dividends and other portfolio income.

However, that income comes with a trade-off.

Covered-call strategies can limit upside participation when markets rally sharply, making total returns just as important as the size of distributions.

That trade-off has driven innovation across the category, with newer ETFs seeking to balance income generation with greater participation in equity gains.

VOOY takes a broader approach by combining core U.S. large-cap exposure with an options-driven income strategy, rather than focusing exclusively on high-yield stocks or aggressive option selling.

The launch underscores how ETF issuers are increasingly looking to add an income layer to familiar equity exposures as investors seek cash flow without abandoning stocks.
