Germany blames Russia for attempted drone attack near Leipzig airport

Germany said three explosive-laden drones found around a Leipzig airport last month amounted to an attempted attack and accused Russia of “open hostility.” Berlin’s interior minister announced countermeasures; EU leaders backed the move.

Germany blamed Russia for an attempted drone attack on a Leipzig airport last month, in a significant escalation of tensions between Europe and its eastern neighbor.

Three explosive-laden drones were found around the airport, one near a Ukrainian plane transporting munitions.

Berlin’s interior minister said Moscow was treating Europe with “open hostility” and announced countermeasures.

EU leaders supported the move, and announced an initiative to boost defense cooperation with Ukraine and the UK.

It is the first time Berlin has openly accused Russia of an attempted attack within German borders, Die Zeit’s foreign affairs editor said, describing it as a smart and “half-courageous” move that liberates the security forces, but also commits Germany to more direct clashes with Russia.
