Iran threatened military and economic retaliation after Washington expanded sanctions targeting its economy and oil trade.

The U.S. sanctioned 60 individuals, entities and vessels, while warning countries trading with Iran they could lose access to the dollar-based financial system.

However, major Chinese banks were spared for now.

Tensions remain high around the Strait of Hormuz, where oil flows have fallen sharply and a tanker was struck Tuesday.

Diplomatic efforts continue, but no lasting solution has emerged.
