NZX 50 edges higher as sector gains lift sentiment

New Zealand’s NZX 50 climbs 27 points, or 0.2%, to 13,908 in Tuesday morning trade, led by gains in consumer discretionary, healthcare and energy.

New Zealand stocks climbed 27 points, or 0.2%, to 13,908 in Tuesday morning trade, halting losses in the previous session, mainly buoyed by gains in consumer discretionary, healthcare, and energy.

The broader index tracked a slight rise in US stock futures ahead of Nvidia earnings and US PCE price data later this week.

Optimism over earnings season lifted sentiment, with some companies announcing their results this week, including Port of Tauranga and Channel Infrastructure.

However, caution limited the gains ahead of the US PCE price data for guidance on the Fed's monetary policy decision at its upcoming meeting, as well as FOMC speeches at the Jackson Hole Symposium later this week.

Among early gainers were Hallenstein Glassons (2.5%), Ryman Healthcare (1.4%), ANZ Group (0.7%), and Fisher & Paykel (0.5%).

Air New Zealand, Port of Tauranga, and Channel Infrastructure each rose 0.6% ahead of the release of their earnings reports this week.
