Walmart falls after Q2 results and soft Q3 guidance
Walmart shares fall around 10% after the retailer reports second-quarter adjusted EPS of 81 cents and sales of $187.9 billion, while third-quarter guidance comes in below estimates.
U.S. stocks traded lower midway through trading, with the Nasdaq Composite falling over 200 points on Thursday.
The Dow traded down 0.84% to 53,015.12 while the NASDAQ fell 0.87% to 26,100.76.
The S&P 500 also fell, dropping, 0.41% to 7,676.76.
Leading and Lagging Sectors Energy shares jumped by 1.5% on Thursday.
In trading on Thursday, consumer staples stocks fell by 1.8%.
Top Headline Walmart Inc. (NASDAQ: WMT ) shares fell around 10% on Thursday after the retail giant reported second-quarter results and issued third-quarter guidance below estimates.
Walmart reported adjusted earnings of 81 cents per share, beating the consensus estimate of 74 cents.
Sales reached $187.9 billion, topping the $186.8 billion estimate.
For the third quarter, Walmart expects adjusted EPS of 62 cents-64 cents, below the 68-cent estimate.
It forecasts sales of $183.134 billion-$184.468 billion, compared with the $188.339 billion estimate.
Equities Trading UP Scansource Inc (NASDAQ: SCSC ) shares shot up 17% to $60.38 after the company reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter financial results and issued FY27 sales guidance above estimates.
Also, the company signed a deal to acquire MicroAge.
Shares of Huize Holding Ltd (NASDAQ: HUIZ ) got a boost, surging 34% to $1.96 after the company reported H1 2026 results.
HIVE Digital Technologies Ltd ( NASDAQ: HIVE ) shares were also up, gaining 11% to $3.12.
Shares of crypto-linked companies traded higher amid a rise in Bitcoin after President Trump urged Congress to pass the Clarity Act and said the Commodity Futures Trading Commission Chair Michael Selig is working to bring Hyperliquid to the U.S.
Equities Trading DOWN Onfolio Holdings Inc ( NASDAQ: ONFO ) shares dropped 35% to $1.55 after the company reported a year-over-year decrease in its second-quarter financial results.
Shares of Advance Auto Parts Inc ( NYSE: AAP ) were down 23% to $43.16 after the company reported mixed second-quarter financial results and affirmed its FY26 sales guidance below estimates.
Hovnanian Enterprises Inc (NYSE: HOV ) was down, falling 15% to $108.90 after the company reported worse-than-expected third-quarter financial results.
Commodities In commodity news, oil traded up 3% to $88.39 while gold traded up 0.6% at $4,571.40.
Silver traded up 4% to $68.46 on Thursday, while copper fell 0.6% to $6.4560.
Euro zone European shares were mostly lower today.
The eurozone’s STOXX 600 declined 0.2%, while Spain’s IBEX 35 Index fell 0.1%, London’s FTSE 100 rose 0.1%, Germany’s DAX declined 0.4%, while France’s CAC 40 dipped 0.5%.
Asia Pacific Markets Asian markets closed higher on Thursday, with Japan’s Nikkei 225 gaining 1.36%, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index gaining 0.80%, China’s Shanghai Composite rising 0.24% and India’s BSE Sensex surging 0.82%.
Economics U.S. initial jobless claims declined by 6,000 to 206,000 in the second week of August, compared to market estimates of 210,000.
The Philadelphia Fed Manufacturing Index climbed to 47.4 in August from 41.4 in the previous month, recording its strongest level since April 2021 and higher than market expectations of 25.
U.S. natural gas stocks rose 16 billion cubic feet in the week ending Aug.
