Meanwhile, foreign inflows increased for a second day on Wednesday.
Most listed companies advanced, led by gains in Eternal, Kotak Bank, ITC, Bajaj Finance, Axis Bank, UltraTech Cement and Infosys.
Tata Steel, IndiGo, HCL Tech and Titan bucked the trend as the only decliners.
