Tom Lee's BitMine Is Close to Owning 5% of All ETH: What Happens to BMNR When It Does?

BitMine’s Efficient Strategy BitMine, which began life as a Bitcoin mining company before pivoting toward an Ethereum treasury strategy, has accumulated 5.81 million ETH worth nearly $11 billion at current prices.
That represents roughly 4.8% of Ethereum’s circulating supply and puts the company about 96% of the way toward its stated 5% target after 14 months of purchases.
Fundstrat co-founder and BitMine chairman Tom Lee has described the strategy around reaching that threshold as the “Alchemy of 5%,” effectively positioning BitMine as one of Ethereum’s largest institutional stakeholders.
But unlike Strategy (NASDAQ: MSTR ), whose digital asset treasury strategy centers primarily around accumulating and holding Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC), BitMine can put its Ethereum to work.
The company has staked more than 5 million ETH, worth around $9.8 billion, through its staking operations.
At an estimated staking yield of 2.63%, BitMine has projected annualized staking revenue of approximately $257 million.
That gives the company an additional source of returns while potentially allowing its ETH holdings to increase through staking rewards even without additional purchases.
Three Possibilities After 5% The bigger question for Ethereum investors is what BitMine does once it crosses its target.
One possibility is that nothing changes.
Lee has remained highly bullish on Ethereum, meaning BitMine could simply push beyond the 5% threshold and continue buying, particularly if management believes ETH remains undervalued during the current crypto bear market.
Continued accumulation would keep one of Ethereum’s largest sources of corporate demand in place while moving additional ETH into a long-term treasury and staking strategy.
A second, and potentially more likely, scenario is that BitMine begins tapering purchases.
On chain data shows ts acquisition pace has already slowed this year.
Once the 5% objective is achieved, management could shift its focus from rapid accumulation toward managing its enormous balance sheet and maximizing staking returns.
The third scenario would see BitMine stop buying ETH altogether.
While considered less likely, the disappearance of one of Ethereum’s largest corporate buyers could weigh on short-term sentiment by removing a significant source of incremental demand.
