GM-Samsung Battery Partnership Expands The companies will jointly develop next-generation prismatic battery cells for potential future electric vehicle applications.
Separately, Samsung SDI has acquired GM's 49.99% stake in their SynergyCells joint venture plant in New Carlisle, Indiana, as the companies adjust their manufacturing plans amid slower-than-expected EV demand growth.
Samsung SDI and GM will co-develop prismatic battery cells designed for high energy density and fast-charging capability.
The agreement preserves their battery technology collaboration even as Samsung SDI takes full ownership of the Indiana plant.
Samsung SDI Takes Control Of Indiana Plant The acquisition gives Samsung SDI its first independently operated battery production base in North America.
The plant remains under construction and will initially produce batteries for energy storage systems, which store electricity for later use.
Samsung SDI said the facility could eventually produce the prismatic cells being developed with GM. "While reflecting recent market changes, this acquisition decision is to continue the strategic partnership with GM," said a SAMSUNG SDI official. "We will continue our commitment to an electrified future with the partner, while utilizing the plant to proactively respond to the fast-growing ESS market in the U.S." GM Stock: Key Technical Levels To Watch GM remains in a longer-term uptrend, trading above its 20-day, 50-day, 100-day, and 200-day moving averages.
