Two weeks ago, a Federal Reserve rate hold on Wednesday looked like a lock.
Then the U.S.-Iran ceasefire collapsed, oil spiked, and traders started repricing fast.
Polymarket still gives a 76% chance the Fed stays put, and a 24% chance of a 25bps increase.
Stocks fell after Chairman Kevin Warsh’s hawkish June debut.
The more interesting board is on Kalshi, where traders are betting on which words Warsh will say at just his second press conference since taking over from Jerome Powell in May.
What Kalshi Predicts Warsh Will Say “Productivity” tops the board at 88%, with “AI” close behind at 81%.
Warsh announced five task forces in June, including one on productivity and jobs “in an era of transformation,” and he has argued AI may prove deflationary. “Balance Sheet” sits at 86%, fitting for a chairman who has been a consistent critic of the Fed’s $6.7 trillion portfolio.
Yet “QT,” the actual mechanism for shrinking it, trades at just 25%.
Traders may be betting Warsh talks about the patient without naming the surgery. “Oil” trades at 75% and “Shock” at 53%, the two contracts most directly wired to that ceasefire collapse.
The Fed’s June statement already blamed elevated inflation partly on “supply shocks” in sectors including energy, and with tankers reportedly under attack again, traders expect a rerun. “Family Fight / Family Feud” is at 44%.
Warsh has used the phrase 13 times since his April nomination hearing, according to a CNBC tally.
What Kalshi Predicts Warsh Will Skip “Projection” trades at just 44% after Warsh declined to submit his own rate forecast in June. “Trump” sits at 11%.
The president appointed Warsh and could bristle at any move toward higher rates, yet traders price his name as a near-certain omission. “Dissent” trades at only 30%, even though economists expect at least two hawkish dissents Wednesday.
The low odds fit the man: Warsh prizes consensus and has made clear that disagreements, like all family fights, belong inside the family, not at the podium. “Egg,” the inflation mascot of 2025, sits at 22% now that a dozen costs about $2.14, down from a $6.23 peak. “Renovation” trades at 6%, a quiet burial for the $2.5 billion headquarters fight Trump once waged against Powell. “Truflation” sits at 4%.
That’s despite Warsh’s public push to replace what he calls problematic government data with real-time private gauges, exactly the kind Truflation sells.
Traders just don’t think he names the brand from the podium.
Reading The Board Traders expect a chairman who aggressively sells his reform project while staying tight-lipped on monetary policy.
Now that Warsh has scrapped forward guidance, the Fed no longer tells markets what comes next.
On Wednesday, how he talks may be the closest thing to a hint they get.
